Moving to Portugal: The Complete Paperwork Checklist

Most of the friction in relocating to Portugal is not any single step being hard, it is doing the steps out of order. Here is the sequence that avoids the usual stalls.

1. Get your NIF

2. Open a Portuguese bank account

Needed for a visa file, a rental deposit, or a property purchase, and impossible to open without a NIF. See what the process involves, or open one remotely with Bank Account Online.

3. Apply for the right visa, if you need one

EU/EEA/Swiss citizens can skip this step. Everyone else needs to pick between the D7, D8, or Golden Visa, see which one fits your situation. This is also the step where having your NIF and bank account already sorted saves the most time, both are required documents for the file.

4. Line up proof of address

Banks, visa offices, and later a residency registration will all ask for it in slightly different formats. Keep a recent utility bill or rental agreement handy, both from your home country before you move and from Portugal once you arrive.

5. Register locally once you land

Depending on your visa type, this can include registering with your local city council (câmara municipal), enrolling with the national health service, and, for non-EU citizens on certain visas, an appointment with immigration authorities to convert your visa into a residence permit.
